A discharged US Marine takes up the role of a High School teacher to teach poetry. The class is filled with students coming in from diverse backgrounds. As most of them are 

underprivileged and have gone through the worst in their lives, their focus on their studies is very little. They rebel against the system and rely on drugs. In this circumstance, the protagonist Louanne joins their class and takes up this challenging assignment to get them graduated. Michelle Pfeiffer delivers a brilliant performance in the film. The famous song "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio is one of the soundtracks for this movie

The Hindi movie "Hichki" very much resembles this one. 

படிப்பில் நாட்டம் இல்லாமல் சுற்றித்திரியும் ஒரு மாணவர் கூட்டத்திற்கு , கல்வியின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை உணர்த்த படாதபாடுபடும் ஒரு ஆசிரியரின் கதை .  அமெரிக்காவின் கடற்படையில் பணிபுரிந்த அனுபவம் உள்ள அவர், ஆசிரியர் பணி எளிதான ஒன்றுதான் என்று நினைத்து அந்த பள்ளியில் சேர்கிறார். வகுப்பறைக்குள் நுழைந்தவுடன்தான் தெரிகிறது இது எவ்வளவு கடினமான வேலை என்று. சமுதாயத்தின் பல்வேறு அடுக்குகளிலிருந்து வரும் அந்த மாணவர்கள் ஏழ்மை, போதைப்பொருள் கடத்தல், பாலியல் மற்றும் உளவியல் ரீதியான துன்புறுத்தல் போன்ற பல பிரச்சனைகளை சந்திக்கின்றனர். இதனால் பள்ளிக்கு ஒழுங்காக வருவதையே பெரும் பிரச்சனையாக    பார்க்கின்றனர். தினமும் இந்த மாணவர்களுக்கிடையே புது சவால்களை எதிர்கொள்ளும் அந்த ஆசிரியர் இறுதியில் தான் நினைத்ததை சாதிக்க முடிந்ததா, மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் வகுப்பில் தேர்ச்சி அடைந்தார்களா, என்பதை அருமையாக சொல்கிறது இந்தத் திரைப்படம் .  இந்தியில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட "ஹிச்கி" திரைப்படம் இந்தக் கதையின் சாயலைக் கொண்டது.
