"Marriage Story" is an intense drama capturing the emotional complexities that entwine a married couple who have applied for a Divorce. Though outwardly for many Divorce seems to be the death of love between a couple, this movie truly portrays the actual sufferings that both parties go through once they decide to end their relationship. Charlie and Nicole fell in love with each other a few years ago and have a son. Both of them loved certain qualities in each other that made them connect and get married. Charlie is a Theatre professional in New York while Nicole is an actress from Los Angeles who aspires to make it big in the Film industry. Once their relationship starts getting serious, Nicole moves in with Charlie to New York and starts her life with him. She also partners with Charlie and helps him write scripts for his plays which also garner critical acclaim. As the years roll by, Nicole starts to feel that her creativity has been used by Charlie for his professional gains and growth. She feels that she has been emotionally manipulated into joining Charlie's drama troupe and starts hating New York. This creates a rift between them and badly strains their relationship. To make things worse, Charlie also ends up sleeping with one of the female performers in his troupe. Heartbroken, Nicole separates from Charlie and takes her son along with her to her Mother's house in Los Angeles. Charlie initially thinks that this was just a phase they were going through which will soon be resolved after a heart-to-heart. However, he understands of the situation once Nicole serves him with divorce papers. The movie is shot very naturally to present the actual issues that couples go through once the Divorce begins. This includes the courtroom drama, expenses, custodial battle for kids and the like. In the end, you will know if they were able to come to a mutual understanding on the Divorce or not.
பல வருடங்கள் காதலித்து , திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டு ஒரு குழந்தையுடன் நியூயார்க்கில் வாழும் தம்பதியினர்- சார்லி மற்றும் நிக்கோல். திடீரென இவர்களுக்குள் ஏற்பட்ட மனக்கசப்பு , சண்டையில் ஆரம்பித்து , பின் விவாகரத்து வரை சென்றுவிடுகிறது. கதையின் மையக்கரு நமக்கு புதிதாக தெரியவில்லை என்றாலும் திரைக்கதையில் படத்தின் முழு பலமும் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. வெளியிலிருந்து பார்ப்பவர்களுக்கு விவாகரத்து என்ற சொல் , இரு மனங்களுக்கிடையேயான காதலை முறித்து வைக்கும் பொருளைக்கொண்டதாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. இருப்பினும் , விவாகரத்து கேட்டு விண்ணப்பிக்கும் தம்பதிகள், அதன் பின் நிம்மதி பெருமூச்சு விடுவதில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் இதற்கென வரையறுக்கப்படும் சட்டங்களும் , அதற்கான செலவுகளும் , பிள்ளைகளின் மேல் யாருக்கு எவ்வளவு உரிமை உண்டென்ற சட்டப்போராட்டமும் எந்த அளவு அந்த தம்பதிகளை உளவியல் ரீதியாக பாதிக்கின்றன என்பதை ஆழமாக கூறுகிறது இந்த திரைப்படம். ஆடம் மற்றும் ஸ்கார்லெட்டின் நடிப்பு மிகவும் இயல்பாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. நிறைய இடங்களில் "Revolutionary Road" திரைப்படத்தில் நடித்த லியோ மற்றும் கேட் வரும் காட்சிகளை இந்த திரைப்படம் நினைவூட்டுகிறது. நிக்கோல் விவாகரத்து கேட்கும் காரணம், தன் கணவன் சார்லியின் சில சுயநலம் கலந்த முடிவுகள். நியூயார்க்கில் நாடககுழு ஒன்றை நடத்தி வரும் சார்லிக்கும், நடிகையாக விரும்பி ஹாலிவூடில் கால் பாதிக்க நினைக்கும் நிக்கோலிற்கும் கண்டதும் காதல் பற்றிக்கொள்கிறது. லாஸ் ஏஞ்செலஸ் நகரத்தில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த நிக்கோலிற்கு நியூயார்க் பிடிக்கவில்லை. இருந்தாலும் , தன் காதலனுக்காக நியூயார்க்கிற்கு இடம்பெயர்கிறார். சார்லியுடன் வாழ்க்கை இனிதே ஆரம்பம் ஆகிறது. அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு ஆண் குழந்தையும் பிறக்கிறது. நடிப்பில் இன்னும் மிகுந்த ஆர்வம் உள்ள நிக்கோல் , சார்லியுடன் சேர்ந்து அவர் நடத்தும் நாடக குழு வளர பாடுபடுகிறார். சில நேரங்களில் நிக்கோல் கூறும் யோசனைகளை சார்லி உபயோகப்படுத்த , அந்த நாடகங்களுக்கு பலத்த வரவேற்பு வருகிறது. எனினும் பெயரும் , புகழும் சார்லியை நோக்கியே செல்கின்றன. இதனால் மனமுடைந்த நிக்கோல் , இதைப்பற்றி பேச நினைக்கும்போதெல்லாம் , சார்லியால் உதாசீனப்படுத்த படுகிறார். நிலைமை நாளுக்கு நாள் மோசமாகிக்கொண்டே போகிறது. ஒரு கட்டத்தில் , சார்லிக்கும் வேறொரு பெண்ணிற்கும் தொடர்பு இருக்கிறது இன்பதை தெரிந்துகொண்ட நிக்கோல் , இனி பொறுக்கமுடியாது என்று நினைத்து விவாகரத்திற்கு விண்ணப்பிக்கிறார். படத்தின் முக்கியத்துவமே அங்கிருந்துதான் தொடங்குகிறது. இறுதியில் இவர்களுக்கு அந்த விவாகரத்து கிடைத்ததா , இல்லையா என்பது படத்தின் முடிவில் அழகாக சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது .
